Greenery v2.2 - WordPress Theme

greenerySupports Wordpress 2.6+

This is a snazzy dark grey theme with splashes of greenery (hence the name). The original template is an open-source design by Pat Heard from FullAhead.org.

I have included, as of Version 2.0, an Adobe Photoshop template file that allows the painless creation of custom theme “middle-space” images (hint: the “middle-space” is the large section between the main content and the sidebar that has lots of “greenery” in it).

I get lots of questions on this theme surrounding the menu tabs at the top. By default only a few choices are shown (homepage, about page, and the archives) because, quite frankly, there’s not a lot of real-estate up there to be showing a dozen page tabs - and there’s a secondary navigation in the sidebar that shows ALL pages. However, I have included all the PHP code you’d need (inside the header.php file) to allow your pages to be tabbed up top. :-)

Theme looks great. I am interested in seeing the blue with the H20. I don’t recall seeing a blog design like greenery before. Unfortunately (or not) I have invested many hours in my current theme (which I am still struggling with BTW), so I am loathe to change themes right now. But it does look nice. And yes, if you look at my site, there is some “negative” influence on my site.

  5. Posted April 3, 2006 at 11:18 pm | Permalink

smart001 :: Yes, I saw your “negative” influence. :-) Keep pluggin’ away… eventually the CSS gets beaten into submission.

I little tip with the rounded corner CSS. As much as we really, really want to consolidate the div styles (especially when there’s like eight of them doing the exact same thing) it actually screws up the rounded borders. It’s goofy, I know, but leaving the repititive lines of CSS code as is ends up working the best.

    Browsers are screwy. :-)

sergio :: Can you tell me what the bug is? It looks fine for me.

  8. Posted April 18, 2006 at 8:53 am | Permalink

    Hello
    Sorry for not detail it.
If the images are very big in the post or you use another wysitwyg editor. The sidebar goes to the botom of the page at ie, on firefox function very well

  9. Posted April 18, 2006 at 4:21 pm | Permalink

In IE it will allow images to enlarge a space that they are in… like the main column of the theme. What is happening is that the main column is getting enlarged and the sum of the widths of the main column and the sidebar are greater than the actual container width of the whole page (regardless of the browser window width) and so the sidebar will get “pushed” to below the main content (or sometimes vice versa).

This is a very common happening in web layouts. The solution is to make sure that you don’t set your main column width too large and don’t use oversized images.

Email me if you’d like more specific guidance.

Is there a PSD available to change the grass image? It’s a great theme & changing that one image is all that’s really needed to customize different sites to match their subject.

    Thanks!

  14. Posted June 3, 2006 at 10:05 am | Permalink

There’s not a PSD or layered PNG, but I’ve seen many examples of people who created their own. If you’re good with a vector drawing program it’s fairly straight-forward to draw a vector mask that will then let you put any image you want behind an already shadowed mask.

I hope I didn’t get this principled developer in trouble.

  16. Posted August 11, 2006 at 3:50 am | Permalink

The “German Translation” package is corrupt, there is only the “images” folder inside. :-(

Anyway, thanks for the update. I will test it today. Have you a changelog or something? It would be nice to see a list of features/changes for people wich have the v1.0 installed.

    greets,

    Jeremy

  17. Posted August 11, 2006 at 3:46 pm | Permalink

Jeremy :: I just checked and I could unzip the German version fine. Check your program again. And yes, the changelog is in the style.css file… that is the default location for the changelog in WordPress themes, although it is not universally done that way.

    I hope that helps. :-)

don’t sue WarAxe for mistakes I’m guilty for ;)

I’ve encountered some small errors out of hastiness in that version.
I also haven’t tweaked the comments in the code …
I’ll make an update of the german theme an send it to WarAxe tomorrow

  20. Posted August 12, 2006 at 10:28 am | Permalink

Rolle :: Thanks… I’ll put it up when you’re done. I added widget compatibility to the sidebar of both English and German version, so make sure you modify the latest version. :-)

TeNTiRuJo :: Not yet… volunteers? All you need to do is downlad the English version and translate everything that is in English (except PHP and HTML code) and resave the files.

Hey there… thanks for the wonderful template. I’m already one step ahead of you though. I’ve already modified the image to include the ocean. You can take a look at it on my site! However, I am curious… do you have the PSD files for this theme? I mean I can modify it without… but it would be a WHOLE lot easier if I had them. Let me know, k? Thanks!

The template is AWESOME and he’s really excited to get to work on it.

  31. Posted December 2, 2006 at 1:19 pm | Permalink

Raquita :: The area where the title of the blog is not colored by the stylesheet file, but actually by a background image. If you look in the images area of the theme you’ll find the image that corresponds to the top of the theme. You can edit it using any standard image editing software, but remember to make the same changes to the center divider image as well. :-)

Thanks war axe, I had a site setup with the original theme from fullahead, yet I needed the publishing power of wordpress. Seeing your theme with widget support here was great. Thanks so much.

However…could you please give me some insight as to why my eventcalendar widget is bleeding out over the sidebar? As well, the footer…how can I mod that to actually appear at the far bottom (foot) of the page rather than at the bottom of the sidebar? Thanks so much for your time again.

    hola …
one question …the theme makes two div’s after the /html tag.
you could see this also in the source-code of your demo page!

how could i remove this div’s?!?
    thx 4 u support

    OK … i found the error. :)

you have in the sidebar.php the call to the get_footer() function.

i take this function call [get_footer()] at the last line of the index.php and anything is fine

and with this change the page is realy valid XHTML 1.0 transitional!!! ;)

    Hi,

I have a problem with your theme. It looks well and works with all browsers(IE7, Safari3, Opera9.27) but FireFox2.

    Here are two screenshots:
    http://img186.imageshack.us/my.php?image=greenerybrokenzx4.png
    http://img206.imageshack.us/my.php?image=greenerybroken2ja1.png

At the second one you can see, it works with IE7 but don’t with FF2. I tried with three PCs, it never worked with FF2.

I work with the german WP2.5, your original theme(No changes in the css-file or other files of your theme (besides the added favicon)).

I hope, somebody can help me.

  48. Posted April 23, 2008 at 4:25 pm | Permalink

@ madenwirt :: I’m sorry for your troubles. It looks fine for me in FF2, so if I can’t duplicate your problem I can’t really work on solving it.

If anyone has any ideas or is having a similar problem please let me know.

  49. Posted May 11, 2008 at 6:39 pm | Permalink

Right now I tried a german version of Greenery1.1 and it worked well.
But v1.1 does not look that great, so I tried it again with your english v2.0 - same problem as described before.
Quite accidentally I got the cause of that problem - it is the site name.

As you can see at the screenshots in my last comment, the sidebar ends at the point the site name starts. if I shorten the name, the sidebar moves more at the right side - and it looks almost perfect if I delete the site name.

Now I know what causes the problem, but not how to solve it :/
I hope, you have an idea. ;)

(I am going to provide a german translation of the theme, if it will work with my WP-installation)

  50. Posted May 18, 2008 at 1:36 am | Permalink

Hi, I love this theme and have been using an earlier version of Greenery on my blog for around a year or so now. I’ve tried this new version and it doesn’t work with Firefox 3 RC1 however. This was true of both the demo on this site and when I applied it on mine. The earlier version, which I’m still using does.

Anyway, thanks for the great template, recently I’ve been wanting to find a template with a wider content area to take better advantage of 1024, and a version with 2 side bars. Nothing looks as nice as greenery! So my wish list would be these two features in a second version the template along with the Firefox 3 tweak.

  51. Posted May 18, 2008 at 1:21 pm | Permalink

    @Tim
I’ll take a look at it in FF3 and see if I can diagnose the issue.

    Hi,
I just downloaded the latest version of your Greenery theme and love it! I’m a relative newbie to WordPress, but your theme was easy to implement, and the header php script was fairly easy to change (even for me, non-script girl). Thanks so much!
