			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We spent the Fourth of July out at my folks&#8217; in Olean, NY.  I got some delicious homemade <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_chocolate_cake">German Chocolate Cake</a> for my birthday, and we enjoyed fireworks from about a mile away.  I experimented with the Canon G9 by snapping some fireworks at full zoom while the camera was &#8220;attached&#8221; to a folding chair with one of those crazy flexi-tri-pods.  It was a site to behold&#8230; but actually took some decent pics!</p>

<p class="clear">We stopped at <a href="http://www.rockcitypark.com/">Rock City Park</a> while we were there.  Here&#8217;s some details from their website:</p>

Rock City Park, located in the Enchanted Mountains of Cattaraugus County, south of Olean, New York on Route 16, is sometimes called one of the Eighth Wonders of the World. This prehistoric ocean floor is the World’s largest exposure of quartz conglomerate (also called ocean spar or puddingstone) and attracts thousands of visitors yearly.</p>
<p>Visitors are astounded by gigantic boulders several stories high with huge crevices sometimes referred to as “streets.” Rock City Park is believed to have been a fortress for the Seneca Indians at one time. “Three Sisters”, “Balancing Rock (a 1000 ton boulder), and “Indian Face” rock are just some of the natural rock formations found along Rock City’s scenic trails. From “Signal Rock,” once used as a signaling point by Indians, visitors enjoy the 1,000 square mile panoramic view of the Enchanted Mountains.</p>
<p>Rock City Park features a three quarter mile natural trail consisting of various steps and paths necessitating comfortable clothing and good walking shoes. During spring and summer you will see a variety of wildflowers, ferns, moss, Mountain Laurel (which blooms late in June) and of course enjoy the quiet serenity of the forest nestled among this geological wonder. Leaf peepers enjoy Rock City Park&#8217;s spectacular fall foliage.

<p class="clear">On the trek back to Albany we spent a few relaxing days in the Finger Lakes&#8230; including <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watkins_Glen_State_Park">Watkins Glen</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taughannock_Falls_State_Park">Taughannock Falls</a>.</p>

<strong>1958</strong> &#8211; Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack&#8217;s shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.<br />
<strong>2008</strong> &#8211; School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers. </p>
<p>Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.<br />
<strong>1958</strong> &#8211; Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.<br />
<strong>2008</strong> &#8211; Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it. </p>
<p>Jeffrey won&#8217;t be still in class, disrupts other students.<br />
<strong>1958</strong> &#8211; Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by the Principal. Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.<br />
<strong>2008</strong> &#8211; Jeffrey given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability. </p>
<p>Billy breaks a window in his neighbor&#8217;s car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.<br />
<strong>1958</strong> &#8211; Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college, and becomes a successful businessman.<br />
<strong>2008</strong> &#8211; Billy&#8217;s dad is arrested for child abuse.. Billy removed to foster care and joins a gang. State psychologist tells Billy&#8217;s sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy&#8217;s mom has affair with psychologist. </p>
<p>Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.<br />
<strong>1958</strong> &#8211; Mark shares aspirin with Principal out on the smoking dock.<br />
<strong>2008</strong> &#8211; Police called, Mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car searched for drugs and weapons. </p>
<p>Pedro fails high school English.<br />
<strong>1958</strong> &#8211; Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, goes to college.<br />
<strong>2008</strong> &#8211; Pedro&#8217;s cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action laws suit against state school system and Pedro&#8217;s English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English. </p>
<p>Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from 4th of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle, blows up a red ant bed.<br />
<strong>1958</strong> &#8211; Ants die.<br />
<strong>2008</strong> &#8211; ATF, Homeland Security, FBI called. Johnny charged with domestic terrorism, FBI investigates parents, siblings removed from home, computers confiscated, Johnny&#8217;s Dad goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again. </p>
<p>Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.<br />
<strong>1958</strong> &#8211; In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.<br />
<strong>2008</strong> &#8211; Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.</p></blockquote>

Although the exact date is a bit arbitrary, back in 1776 the early American colonies voted to be free from Great Britain.  Eventually the fourth of July became a national holiday marked by vivacious celebrations including fireworks, flags and fanfare.  People invite over friends and fire up the grill, throwing on the fire a few slabs of raw meat.  In between sips of ale party-goers toss small black-powder devices at the noisy young children running around (oh wait&#8230; that&#8217;s just what I do).  <img src='http://negative99.com/wordpress/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>Anyways&#8230; I hope all my fellow Americans are having a great July 4th, and I just want to leave you with this Independence Day speech from July 4, 1946, given by a young <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F._Kennedy">John F. Kennedy</a> (excerpted from his full speech as found in the <a href="http://www.jfklibrary.org/">JFK Presidential Library</a>).</p>
<blockquote><p>
     The informing spirit of the American character has always been a deep religious sense.</p>
<p>     Throughout the years, down to the present, a devotion to fundamental religious principles has characterized American thought and action.</p>
<p>     Our government was founded on the essential religious idea of integrity of the individual. It was this religious sense which inspired the authors of the Declaration of Independence:<br />
    &#8220;We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights.&#8221;</p>
<p>     Our earliest legislation was inspired by this deep religious sense:<br />
    &#8220;Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion.&#8221;</p>
<p>     Our first leader, Washington, was inspired by this deep religious sense:<br />
    &#8220;Of all of the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.&#8221;</p>
<p>     Lincoln was inspired by this deep religious sense:<br />
    &#8220;That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth.&#8221;</p>
<p>     Our late, lamented President was inspired by this deep religious sense:<br />
    &#8220;We shall win this war, and in victory we shall seek not vengeance, but the establishment of an international order in which the spirit of Christ shall rule the hearts of men and nations.&#8221;</p>
<p>     Thus we see that this nation has ever been inspired by essential religious ideas. The doctrine of slavery which challenged these ideas within our own country was destroyed.</p>
<p>     Recently, the philosophy of racism, which threatened to overwhelm them by attacks from abroad, was also met and destroyed.</p>
<p>     Today these basic religious ideas are challenged by atheism and materialism: at home in the cynical philosophy of many of our intellectuals, abroad in the doctrine of collectivism, which sets up the twin pillars of atheism and materialism as the official philosophical establishment of the State.</p>
<p>     Inspired by a deeply religious sense, this country, which has ever been devoted to the dignity of man, which has ever fostered the growth of the human spirit, has always met and hurled back the challenge of those deathly philosophies of hate and despair. We have defeated them in the past; we will always defeat them.</p>
<p>     How well, then, has DeTocqueville said: &#8220;You may talk of the people and their majesty, but where there is no respect for God can there be much for man? You may talk of the supremacy of the ballot, respect for order, denounce riot, secession&#8211;unless religion is the first link, all is vain.&#8221;

It has a large gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans-gendered, dual-souled, bi-curious, criss-cross, and confused population comparitively with the size of the town, making it one of the highest concentrations of <a href="http://www.ptown.org/">gayness</a> in America.</p>
<p>Now the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Cod">Cape</a> is a beautiful place that has a peaceful quiet that transcends its mere appearance of beaches and seagulls.  And P-town is no exception.  It was remarkable to me, however, that of all the places I&#8217;ve ever been to on the entire planet, P-town was the only one that had anything like &#8220;A Non-Hate Community&#8221; written on its welcome road sign.</p>
<p>So what was my impression of this &#8220;non-hate&#8221; community?  I thought it was the most hateful place I had ever been&#8230; ever.  Really.  It wasn&#8217;t like I feared for my life or that everyone was running around with red glowing eyes and eating each other&#8230; but there was definitely something wrong with the place.  I have never felt more disapproving glances.  I have never seen bumper stickers and apparel with such hateful and intolerant content (usually about President Bush or Republicans).  Really, this place &#8211; that touts tolerance &#8211; was the most intolerant I&#8217;d ever seen.  A sick irony in an already sick country of political correctness and hypocrisy.</p>
<p>It was no surprise that <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2006/07/14/a_new_intolerance_visits_provincetown/">this article</a> just came out in the Boston Globe regarding the July 4 weekend just two weeks ago:</p>

<p>Police say they logged numerous complaints of straight people being called &#8220;breeders&#8221; by gays over the July Fourth holiday weekend. Jamaican workers reported being the target of racial slurs. And a woman was verbally accosted after signing a petition that opposed same-sex marriage, they said.</p>

<p>Winsome Karr, 45, originally from Jamaica, has worked in town since 2002. Lately, she said, the off-color comments stem from gay visitors who mistakenly believe that all Jamaicans share the views of an island religious sect that disagrees with homosexuality.</p>

<p>On same-sex marriage, the clashes have occurred as the state Legislature grapples with whether the electorate should vote on a measure to limit marriage to heterosexuals. A group that supports gay marriage, knowthyneighbor, has created a website displaying the names of more than 100,000 signers of a petition that calls for the state Constitution to be amended to prohibit same-sex marriage.</p>
<p>Knowthyneighbor&#8217;s tactics are controversial, with critics alleging that knowthyneighbor is making the names of same-sex marriage opponents public in an effort to expose or intimidate them. The group&#8217;s founders say they are simply promoting civic discourse.</p>
<p>The names of 43 Provincetown residents are listed on the website. Most of the petition signers attend St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, which serves the Portuguese community and others in town. The Catholic Church has helped lead the fight against same-sex marriage.</p>
<p>One St. Peter&#8217;s parishioner, Yvonne Cabral, was verbally accosted last Friday by Provincetown Magazine publisher Rick Hines after Hines learned that Cabral signed the petition, according to police.</p>
<p>Police Chief Ted Meyer plans to seek charges of disorderly conduct against Hines, who saw Cabral shopping and loudly called her a &#8220;bigot,&#8221; according to both Hines and Meyer. Other people who signed the petition &#8212; and subsequently had their names posted on the same website &#8212; said manure has been spread on their properties in recent months, Meyer added.

<p>This is the kind of stuff that keeps <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church">Westboro Baptist Church</a> in business.</p>

I&#8217;m planning on some rest and relaxation, with 100% chance of clam chowder.  MMmm&#8230; some of that good Cape chowder hit&#8217;s the spot.
