Celtics vs. Lakers - An NBA Finals Treat

The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers will play each other for the NBA championship for the first time in 21 years. This is a classic rivalry that has been credited with reviving a slumping NBA in the 1980’s and propelling it (with the later help of Michael Jordan) into the marketing monster and global phenomenon that it is now. Is Olympic gold back in our sites?

Just how classic a rivalry? The title of the first NBA-approved basketball video game was - ‘Lakers versus Celtics’. I, for one, am psyched that these two teams made it back. An awesome series it shall be.

I was getting nostalgic with a couple guys at work about it. We were recounting the old lineups: Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Danny Ainge, Dennis Johnson, and “The Chief” Robert Parish - Magic Johnson, Kareem, A.C. Green, James Worthy, Byron Scott. We chuckled at each other that we could remember the entire lineups from memory after all this time.

I’ll tell you what - while at the Cape the whole place was buzzing Celtics and Red Sox. Almost every indigenous person I saw was wearing something Red Sox or Celtics.

I didn’t read the whole link about the Olympic basketball team… so maybe there is a pun I missed. But did you mean “sightes” instead of “sites”?

Yeah, I think you’re right… although it’d be “sights”, not “sightes”.

I did find references to “site” meaning the same thing but it’s used more as a verb (to “site” a rifle) rather than the noun meaning for a target (the rifle’s “sight” is set on that turkey).

Or, if I was someone very anal about being correct, I would have edited my previous comment to correct the misspelling and then claimed that you were mistaken and hallucinating. Or I would have completely rewritten the target article about the Olympics to be all about how NBA rivalries fuel website growth. We know someone who might have tried both those scenarios back in the day.

There is nothing like correcting somebody with a mistake of your own. I love it.

    Montane,
You’re dead right about the Lakers vs. Celtics Sega game.

It was so cool to be able to play as Magic Johnson & Larry Bird, after years of playing faceless/nameless nobodies in games like Double Dribble.

Playing a basketball game without the NBA seal is boring in the same way that watching college baseball is boring. Who are these people and why should I care?

I can’t wait for the game tonight. Hopefully this will be a great series. It’s too rare that the two best teams end up in the finals.

Wow, even just Game 1 last night seemed to be a real treat!
