I love dystopias… I really do. Who is actually crazy enough to keep a recommended dystopias section on their blog?
Here’s a flick I just saw a few days ago. ::amazon(“B00005JLWN”, “Equilibrium”):: is a dystopic movie set in a future where war and violence have been “eradicated” by government mandated drugs that remove strong emotion (really almost all emotion). Feelings are actually outlawed and violators are killed. The hero is a government agent who is capable of almost ::imdb(“Matrix”, “Matrix”)::-esque fighting styles because of his government training from youth.
Despite seeming like a clone with cliché looming over every scene, this film jukes left when you’d think it would juke right. Fight scenes expected to be short are long. And vice versa. Good guys are bad, and bad, good. And really, you get to see the hero transform from a zealous (if there is such a no-emotion equivalent) law enforcement agent to an unwilling weapon at the command of oppressive authoritarians. This is very reminiscent of that of the Apostle Paul in the book of Acts and also of the main character in ::amazon(“0842384065″,”Soon”)::, by Jerry B. Jenkins.
I enjoyed this movie. I’m a dystopic nut and this was right up my alley.

I'm a Christ-follower, compelled by my faith toward reason, which points directly toward conservatism. This world's daily onslaught of lunacy offends my intellect and senses, so this is my venue to blow off steam.

Hey Steve. Did you ever watch the movie Dark City? I think it might fit in this category. I thought it was a great movie, but it didn’t do too well, but it’s not a mass-market type of movie anyways – a little quirky.
Nice. I saw that movie a few years ago at the ‘Tute. Loved it. Chris Bale was great in it.
I love this flicks. Dark City? I’ll have to check it out.
Yeah, for whatever reason some good dystopias don’t do so well… The Island was another example.
