People are always looking for someone to blame (and sue) for things that they are ultimately responsible for. Or at least they are just as much to blame as the target of their lawsuits.

I can't imagine suing a company like MySpace for something like this. As other comments have said, it's like suing the phone company because they allowed them to connect, or the car company for letting them get together.

People are crazy but until our justice system puts a stop to this kind of goofy lawsuit, it's just going to keep happening.

Great rebuttal, especially: "and we know that stupidity is a self-propagating wave…" very eloquent indeed. And much more polite way of saying what we all thinking about that women!

First off, what is a, "Buda man"? Or is that some city in the area?

Second, 1% of myspace is such a ridiculous claim to a "fair" settlement. Honestly, i'd have to put 100% blame on the mom...not myspace and not the girl (boy for what he did as well).

I find these law cases etc very amusing and hope you do some of these shamings.

Yes, I think it a problem in America overall. It is too easy to sue people and you don't have a responsibility, so you can pretty much file a lawsuit against anybody for any reason. I think there should be some limitation to it.

mahndisa :: Good to see you alive and kickin'. :-) Yeah, if I was MySpace I'd countersue for ten times the amount. I'd call it repayment for estimated lost revenue from negative publicity.

John :: Ya know... that reminds me a lot of the stupid GE dredging of the Hudson for the PCBs. At the time it was legal, and I know that everyone pushing for GE to pay is just doing it to get back at GE, not because it's a good idea. Nobody living on the river (the ones closest to the PCBs) want this to happen... only the enviro wackos. GE, of course, doesn't want it to happen, but I can't really trust their findings because it's all based on not having to pay. If anything, if I was GE I'd take a PORTION of what it would cost and build a couple water parks along the river.... and call it even.

I'll tell you what. It seems like the classy thing to do with the money is to donate it. If there really is a need to punish the company with a big suit, fine. I don't think there is in this case. But there are probably tons of rape crisis centers that could really use the money.

06 22 06

Whoa Steve! Now that is a classic rant! And I agree. It just seems like today's parenting style is all about passing the buck. My parents are public school teachers and they have noticed a big decline in parental participation over the years and an increase in this attitude: "You're the teacher; you fix the problem!" Blaming MySpace for poor judgement is straight up retarded!!!!! What the hell are they thinking? I suppose we should start suing car companies if we are in an at fault accident? MySpace should countersue the gal's mother in Civil Court for negligence, then let us see what will happen. Geesh, the stupidity in the world is saddening!!!

PS. I have missed stopping by. I will be out of town next week, but will try to start blogging again:) Have a great weekend:)

smart001 :: Amen to that. Responsibility is an endangered word. I was just telling John that if a parent was smart they would hit their kid's MySpace site every day, but then at the dinner table play completely dumb to the fact that such a thing as MySpace exists. :-)

Mike :: :-) Those are some good ones. I was on a blog yesterday where someone actually thought of the fact that the school could get busted for letting the girl leave the premises unsupervised. I thought for sure the lawyer might jump on that one... but chances are she gave the school a note from her mother giving her permission to be picked up by any older boys.

John :: Yeah, I was wondering about the 30 million dollars, too. I mean, when there's a regular rape (if I can say such a thing) that happens in a secluded park or something like that... there's never a huge monetary lawsuit against the perp. Usually you never hear about any lawsuit... except for the DA trying to get the animal put in jail and some shyster defense shark trying to get the guy off entirely. Yeah... I'm sure the mother already has a lot of that money spent in her mind.

I think you're all forgetting. The lawyer clearly states in the quote Steve gave us that Myspace knows that the site is rife with rapists.

Mike made a good point about the phone companies. They probably also know that all kinds of riff raff are using their networks yet they do nothing to stop them, either. And the government often tracks these individuals, what with the sex offender registries, and then lets them use public roads!

The bottom line is that every day, people use products and services for anything from actions merely in bad taste right up to heinous acts of violence. It is a real shame that people want to blame everyone but the person who is most directly responsible. Well, in this case, the young man has been arrested, but you have to ask: Would $30,000,000 unrape your daughter? Maybe this mother is really just so insane with rage (and I hope some guilt) that she really is lashing out blindly and the ambulance chaser is directing that. But I have a feeling most of the parties involved are just picturing new hot tubs and cars.

Also guilty (i.e. sue-able) in this case: phone company (how could they have let those calls take place? They care more about money than about protecting promiscuous teenagers), car company (negligent in not having installed safety devices to prevent a boy from driving a girl to his apartment when they knew that the car may be used for such a criminal act) and the boy’s apartment owners/managers, who conveniently provided the place for this act to occur.

You hit that nail right on the head, I was actually coming here to find out what plugin you use to show all the plugins you use (if you use anything at all), but I will get to that in a minute.

I just saw this on the local news along with my wife. We have a seven month old daughter and we were both shocked and amazed that a mother and some lawer are going to sue mySpace. I really cannot put it any more succinctly than you did, but this (pardon the french) pisses me off. The McDonald's analogy is a pertinent one. mySpace is a good resource for meeting new people and keeping up with old friends, but eventually, parents have got to play a role in their child's life. If my daughter ever wants to have a mySpace page, she will be allowed, but do not think for one minute that I will not have a password to that page so I can monitor who her friends are and who is soliciting her.

And for anyone that crys out "kids need privacy". You are the parents tha tdo not know where your kids are and your's are the kids that are raped, beaten, committing crimes, selling drugs etcetera. It is time for parents to stand up and take responsibility for their children's actions, not to sue some company in a vain attempt to redeem yourself in your child's eyes.

Ok enough of the rant, I probably won't have to post anything on my blog now...I may still though. Just becuase I am irritated.
