Jerry Falwell, RIP

Jerry FalwellSome loved him, and some hated him. But you couldn’t question his commitment to the principles he believed. The majority of attacks on him in life (as well as death) come from people who operate on no moral principles… whom I have no respect for. Only a coward seeks to discredit the stance of another while taking no stance himself.

Now, I’ll be the first to say that sometimes Jerry said some wacky things that made it harder for me to be credible in my culture as a Christ-follower… but when taken in the context of all people, and even all Christians, he was near the top of the food chain with the big dogs. Even if I didn’t agree with him on everything (which I didn’t), I still agree with him on much more than I agree with most other clowns on TV.

There’s an Armenian proverb that says “The dogs that fight each other will join forces against the wolf.” The people and political organizations that hated Jerry the most are the ones that *I* hate the most… and that makes Jerry and me dawgs. So Dr. Falwell, rest in peace.

I just realized that the actor who played him in “The People Vs. Larry Flynt” does look a bit like him.
