My dereliction knows no bounds. but here’s a brief update on life:
- I have nearly completed the new design for the blog… but it’s still weeks away because my schedule’s too tight.
- I am reading The Golden Compass and will be posting my commentary on it, on the book series, on the movie (when it comes out and I see it right away), and on the whole controversy.
- I read a very interesting piece from The Skeptic (a non-religion friendly magazine) on the four possible origins of the universe, and it was very well written and worthy of commentary.
- I spent Thanksgiving in Virginia visiting my new nephew – there are a few pictures below.
I'm a Christ-follower, compelled by my faith toward reason, which points directly toward conservatism. This world's daily onslaught of lunacy offends my intellect and senses, so this is my venue to blow off steam.

Re: the controversy about Golden Compass – I await your comments, because I don’t get it. I guess the guy who wrote the book(s) is an atheist and apparently the book(s) and movie don’t portray Christian values in a positive light? (Hollywood promoting anti Christian fare? Gee, how unusual.) If you don’t think it’s suitable fare for your kids, don’t let them see it. I applaud you for taking an active role in their media consumption, but why make a fuss? (Christians making a fuss over non-Christian entertainment content… gee, how unusual, part deux). All that does is generate free press and increase the box office for the movie. Most of the people in this country (and this world) are not Christians and don’t necessarily share our values, whatever they may be. Get over it.
Actually, The Golden Compass didn’t get that much in revenues, or so says WJR on the shortwave radio I listen to in the morning. Acutally, I don’t know too much about any controversy over that movie. I’ve just seen a few comercials. The commercials seem to advertise an adventure, not an anti Christian movie. Then again, if they advertised it as an anti Christian movie, they would be ripped apart limb from limb by both hard core Christians and those that just call themselve Christians for the heck of it.
I’ve read some of the link up above about The Golden Compass. From what I’ve read, it sounds like the controversy would circle mostly around how the book rips on the Catholic Church, which I happen to be a part of. I acknowledge that in the past, the Church hierarchy was quite corrupt, but now we’ve gotten rid of much that was wrong. Don’t bring up child molesting priests, that was mostly in California (the land of fruits and NUTS) and during the “sexual revolution,” or, more realistically, “the era of sexual perversion of American society.” Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, it looks like there might be a few points of Christian doctrine that the book talks about that could bring about controversy. Also, Catholic doctrines and the doctrines of many Christian faiths are very similiar. Thusly, if you mess with one, you probly messing with 70% of the various Christian faiths. I can’t effectively judge the book yet, I haven’t read it. But, as I type, I’m in my local library, about to remedy that problem.
