I have created a page on this site of recommended dystopias. What is a dystopia you ask? Well… you can either go to the page and find out… or read on.
A dystopia can be thought of as the polar opposite of a utopia. A dystopian society is usually depicted as having an authoritarian or totalitarian form of government that has imposed some kind of oppressive social control over society.
Here’s a great example of a dystopic movie I just saw recently… The Island. Now for whatever reason this film was given tepid reviews and a hasty box office stint, but I thought it was excellent… good acting, great storyline (I don’t care how Matrix-y it was), crazy action sequences and enough suspense to keep me riveted even if there’d been no action. The movie also skillfully mirrors the modern-day debate over stem-cells and organ harvesting from living human babies.
Anyways, for much more information about dystopias (and some lists of dystopic films and literature) visit the Wikipedia article :: dystopia.

I did watch The Island on Saturday. It was pretty good. Although, as is so common in movies of this type, some character inexplicably starts to question his reality. In that regard, I liked the Matrix. Neo didn’t question anything. He was shoved. I know that eventually they indicated that the clones were regaining the memories of their host (another idea I don’t much care for) and that would certainly make reality seem less real. But that’s easy enough to overlook. I’d say more about what I liked, but I don’t want to give anything away. Let’s just say that the contrast between Six Echo’s world and the real world was interesting.
Island was awesome!! Would’ve liked a little more at the end but sets it up for a possible sequel.
