@Julia - I don't think computers made life more complicated. I actually find it more easier to create articles/reports using a computer compared to a typewriter. I agree that technology has been evolving rapidly. But I think what matters is how we cope up with the changes. Read a lot, explore more, and you'll be fine for sure...

More Friend than foe!

I've had my fair share of battle with computers over the years, but overall they have been more friends than foes.

Although the 'foe' moments do stick in my mind. I think it's because when things go wrong they often go badly wrong...like the time I lost 2/3 of my data analysis for my Uni disseration - the hard drive on my laptop just decided to pack up for no particular reason after working fine for +1yr! That was stressful. But the advanced stochastical modelling it allowed me to do wouldn't have been possible 10 years previous.

In my latest battle I wasted a whole morning trying to get printer drivers from CD onto my netbook (no CD drive) via USB stick...the install files just didn't work, I still haven't figured out why.

I've now started using DropBox as another means to manage back ups - very cool - auto syncs the folders you want backing up!

Cheers,

well i myself being an IT professional should disagree completely with that piece BUT how can i deny some of those realities. Though we computer guys, after spending so much time with our computer or other techy gadgets,, accept them as part of our lives and it becomes normal for us. But it gets pretty tough when you have to explain a 10 year old that why you spend so much in front of this screen.,, or when your mother says that When is your work going to finish? seriously will there ever be a day when we will be done with internet? its an ever changing world that takes us away from our genuine world..

Sometimes I wonder at how the simplest of things can sometimes be so complicated. For instance -- having one's photos printed out. In my youth, all one had to do was bring snap some photos, bring in your roll of film to the shop, have it developed, wait an hour or so and -- voila! -- you can enjoy viewing your photos right then and there. Now, you take some shots, fervently pray that they stay in safely saved in your SD card, bring the card to the shop, fervently wish that it is compatible with whatever devices and gadgets they have there, wait for them to do some editing, wait some more --- and then find out that half of your photos have been somehow deleted from the card. Ugh!

I remember a time when submitting reports in school was as simple as whipping out a piece of paper, inserting it into the feed of a typewriter (IF that's what it's called, typing, using liquid eraser in case of erasures, blowing, ensuring that the liquid eraser is dry, then retyping. Simple. Now, students have to go through additional steps -- copy, paste; spell check; file, save as; print (and sometimes the printed material comes out a lot different than what you expect); and all the other complicated stuff involved with using computers. Have they really made life easier .. or more complicated?

By the way, I love that photo with your adorable little one. Father and daughter/son portraits go straight to my hear always. :)

I fully agree with the distraction trait which must also include surfing in lieu of working. One thing not touched upon in this article is the actual effects of the computer environment on our brains and minds and how we think. I have recently gone back to pen and paper for first drafts. My mind feels free and thoughts seem to come from a different place. Nice to feel productive and not chained to a bit of hardwear. There is some thing to be said of the effect of hard drives and their electromagnetic fields and WIFI atmosphere in both the work place and at our home stations. Lots of controversy, yet anyone heard of the electrical whispering effect of human cells let alone the more subtle effects on the aura?

Mike :: Thanks for your co-lamenting. :-) We can rend our clothes together. This is funny... just today I, at one point, unplugged my older HD from the computer... but then when I went into the BIOS the motherboard was still detecting it!? I told the motherboard to check again... and it said it found it again?!?! Can you say... possessed? :-)

Even though you put it hilariously, I empathize with you. My friend said to me the other day that computers solve many of the problems that we would not have had it not been for the existence of computers. Hope you get it worked out.
